Editing And Camera Workshop: Understanding And Using The Basics

Editing and Camera Workshop: Short Sequence

The aim of this footage was to independently start using Adobe Premiere Pro, to learn how to edit using the basics. The topic was about ‘Sitting On A Chair’. The short narrative is a girl walking, picks up an anger management booklet, then sits down on a chair to read about it. A difficulty I found was trying to incorporate a range of editing techniques in order to make the sequence more interesting. I included a fade in at the beginning and at the end to create a cyclical editing structure and when adding in the audio (from adobe) I faded in/out but also minimised the volume of the audio, so it is not too overpowering. To overcome this, I added in an extra cross fade between clips, to aid the smoothness of the sequence; not making it rigid.

However, I found understanding the basics of Premiere Pro easier. For example, putting a sequence together, adding in a few fades and adding a backing track in line with the visual clips. I found that these basics were enough for this sequence, although I could be more experimental with it making it more of a challenge and therefore, learning more effects and transitions I can include in the future.

Next time, I think I could experiment more with shot types, possibly using more equipment such as the dolly and the fig rig. This can add extra depth to my short sequence, which can give me more to play around with in the editing process, for example, juxtaposing camera shots to possibly represent perspective change. Also, next time I could push myself to learn the short cuts more, which could speed up the editing process whilst looking more professional.
