Director Masterclass Part 2

Director Masterclass Part 2 – The Edit

This director masterclass was about sorting out the files from the clips shot in the last masterclass and eventually editing those clips together. However, due to external circumstances I was unable to be their whilst they were filming which meant I had to get the clips sent to me via OneDrive and edit with my own previous knowledge as well as working with what I got sent.

When editing, I tried to use more of the ‘Rolling Edit Tool’ (learnt in the previous editing workshop) so that I could try and use it more to get a better understanding of its effects. When editing, it became useful when I wanted to match some scenes that I couldn’t just snip out, so I adjusted the frame rate either by +/- 1 or 5. This in turn made the fluidity of the sequence increase and became more of a whole instead of just cutting to one scene with dialogue, pause, then another exact same scene. I really liked working with the rolling tool as it felt more professional and is something that I will take on when I am in my own post-production.

A challenge I came across whilst editing was that sometimes, despite using the rolling tool, it was difficult to align some dialogue with a cut, that consequently made the editing looking a little sharp/rigid. This was mainly in the part when Emily (Billie) cried out due to her pain and Callum (Hanssen) went over to see what was wrong. This could have been made better if there was more time to film so we could have gotten more shots, but this is also something where I can expand my editing knowledge by asking for help or even looking at online tutorials on how people overcame a filming/editing error like this and take that information when I end up editing my own future productions. Moreover, another thing to look out for in my own productions is the tone of the dialogue and the pace. In some places of this edit there was an increased pace/harshness compared to a previous frame, so I will take that extra time to be precise with directing the cast so that isn’t an issue in production/post-production.

Despite the challenges and external circumstances, I think the editing went smoothly and I made sure along the way that I was following the script so there were no continuity issues. To progress further, I think it is more of a case of now expanding my Premiere Pro knowledge so that I can create more visually exciting sequences.
