LIGHTING WORKSHOP
This workshop was dedicated to learning about the properties
of light and mainly focusing on three-point lighting. Personally, this was a
very useful workshop as it is another depth added to my learning, and it is
something that can transform the image that I am aiming for.
Whilst experimenting with the three-point lighting, we
altered the key light which is the main source of lighting but also the
brightest light. We put this in front of our subjects – Sam and Hollie, but
usually off to one side so it creates a better depth and adds some extra
dimension. In the first picture, which was in Sam’s shoot, you can see the key
light aimed at a black reflector board, so it absorbed some of the lighting to
make the gel colours more intense. Therefore, this made Sam’s (the subject)
face have a striking juxtaposition of pink and blue. The back light was the
pink, and the fill light was the blue. In the second picture, we opted to go
into a wider area where there are more things in the background (as
experimentation) and were there was more naturalistic lighting due to the
windows. This meant we had to change the positioning of the key light, so it
shone more into the background, making it less flat, adding that extra depth
and illuminating the subject (Hollie). This time the back light was much closer
to Hollie, which caused a separation between her and the background, so it
doesn’t look like a green screen, by highlighting around the shoulders of her.
Furthermore, the fill light was placed in front, just off centre to the subject
to retain some details and reduce the overall contrast of the image.
Overall, this workshop I learnt a lot about the placement of the lighting as well as setting up the equipment too. Whilst doing this workshop, it made me consider how I can use different ways of lighting due to low budget, for example using a phone light, and trying to experiment with that when the camera lights are unavailable. I also thought about the different aesthetics that you can accomplish with the lights and how different it may look by changing the key light, using different gels or even diffusing it.
